The most generous free plan in the comparison: 2,500 subscribers for nothing

The review is based on the provider’s own sources: prices from the pricing page, data location from the privacy policy and billing rules from the help pages — each one dated.

Overview

EmailOctopus

Best when: A newsletter whose list grows fast but whose budget does not

Not for you if: You are after a sales pipeline, lead scoring or e-commerce automations

Start free — 2,500 subscribers (ad)

Good

  • Free plan of 2,500 subscribers — ten times the free plans of MailerLite and Mailchimp

  • British company (Three Hearts Digital Ltd), but the lists are stored in AWS’s Irish data centre inside the EEA

Bad

  • EmailOctopus branding in the emails on the free plan
  • Light automations: no conditional branches as in ActiveCampaign
  • No CRM and no e-commerce integrations on the same scale

Prices exclude VAT, billed monthly unless stated otherwise.(ad) = ad link

  • The price is the monthly price of the cheapest paid plan at that list size. The Free plan column shows when you do not have to pay.
  • EmailOctopus and ActiveCampaign: the price list only shows the monthly price on annual billing. Monthly billing costs more.
  • GetResponse and ActiveCampaign: the smallest list sold is 1,000 contacts, so the 500-contact column shows that price.

What the price covers: The price list shows the monthly price on annual billing. Monthly billing costs more by the price list’s own “Save” figure (€12/year at 500 subscribers, €48/year at 10,000).

How contacts are counted

Unsubscribed contacts do not count toward the limit, nor do hard bounces and spam complaints, which are marked as unsubscribed automatically. Contacts awaiting double opt-in do not count either. One trap: the same address is counted separately for every list — an address on six lists is six contacts.

Deliverability

Deliverability is the share of sent messages that reaches the inbox instead of the spam folder. The figures come from Tooltester’s test series, which ended in January 2024 — they describe 2017–2024, not the present. The average and the range are calculated across all rounds.

Deliverability

EmailOctopus: no independent measurement. Not included in Tooltester’s deliverability test, so no independent measurement exists. That does not mean poor deliverability — it means nobody knows.

Tooltester ended the series with the January 2024 round and explained why in August 2026: seed lists proved unreliable and providers started optimising for them. The figures are therefore history, not a measurement of current deliverability.

Source: Tooltester deliverability test, 12 rounds 8/2017–1/2024. About 80 seed addresses, 28 providers, shared IP addresses. Average across all platforms in the latest round 83.1%. Average and range calculated from the published rounds.

Deliverability features from the help docs

Eight points read from each provider’s own help pages on 13 September 2026. This replaces percentages as a buying basis: a feature can be checked and dated, a seed-list result no longer can. Every cell links to the article it was read from.

Who EmailOctopus suits

Best when: A newsletter whose list grows fast but whose budget does not

Not for you if: You are after a sales pipeline, lead scoring or e-commerce automations

The price rises evenly, not in steps

EmailOctopus’s price follows subscriber count, and the sending quota grows with it. From a thousand subscribers upward the quota is ten times the subscriber count, and on the smallest tier looser still, so in practice it is not the limit you run into.

SubscribersProEmails per month
500€9/mo10,000
1,000€12/mo10,000
2,500€16/mo25,000
5,000€26/mo50,000
10,000€36/mo100,000

From the price list on 3 September 2026, monthly price on annual billing. According to the price list’s own figure, monthly billing costs €12–48 more per year depending on list size.

What matters for the comparison is the evenness: from 500 subscribers to 10,000 the price quadruples, while at MailerLite it rises sevenfold and at Mailchimp more than eightfold. If the list grows steadily, EmailOctopus has the gentlest climb in the comparison, and its bill never jumps.

The free plan is the comparison’s generous exception

2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails a month is ten times the 250-contact free plans of MailerLite and Mailchimp. The trade-off has three parts: the emails carry EmailOctopus branding, reports are kept for only 30 days, and you get one landing page, one form and one user account.

The 30-day retention of reports is the one that surprises. If you send once a month and want to compare spring open rates with autumn, the free plan does not allow it — the figures have already disappeared.

What the package lacks

EmailOctopus is deliberately narrow. It lacks the CRM, online shop event tracking, lead scoring and conditional automation branches that people go to ActiveCampaign for. If you build a multi-step path where the email depends on what the recipient did last week, this is not the right tool.

The other way round, the same thing is its advantage: sending a newsletter needs none of these, and a narrower tool is faster to set up.

The company is British, the list is in Ireland

The service is operated by Three Hearts Digital Ltd (London). According to the privacy policy, contact lists and account data are stored in Amazon Web Services’ Irish data centre, inside the EEA. Read from the policy on 3 September 2026.

So the contracting party is outside the EU, the data inside it. If you record processors and transfer bases in your own documentation, check the transfer basis currently in force for the United Kingdom separately — it is a different question from where the data centre physically is.

Integrations: two direct, the rest through Zapier

EmailOctopus does not state a total number of integrations. The direct connectors are a WordPress plugin and Zapier; Shopify, for example, works only through Zapier, not natively.

In practice that means one extra fee and one extra point of failure if an online shop has to be connected to the list. For website forms and WordPress sites the difference does not show at all. The widest libraries in the comparison are ActiveCampaign’s (over 1,000 apps), Mailchimp’s (300+) and GetResponse’s (170+), but the figures are not comparable with each other: some count connectors that work through Zapier, some do not.

How EmailOctopus compares with the alternatives

  • Against a free plan: 2,500 subscribers is the most in the comparison. MailerLite’s and Mailchimp’s free plans hold 250 contacts, a tenth. Comparison: EmailOctopus vs MailerLite.
  • Against price: at 2,500 subscribers EmailOctopus is the cheapest paid plan in the whole comparison (€16), while Brevo asks €21, MailerLite €29 and Mailchimp €39.11. At a large list the order flips: at 10,000 subscribers Brevo is €28 and EmailOctopus €36. The turning point and its conditions: Brevo vs EmailOctopus.
  • Against features: this is the narrowest tool in the comparison. ActiveCampaign does everything EmailOctopus does not — and costs €149 at 10,000 contacts.

What we do not know yet

The figures above were read from the service’s own price list and privacy policy, and they are dated. On usability and support response time we say nothing: they cannot be read from the documentation, and a guess would harm the reader more than a missing fact. The deliverability figures above were measured by a third party, not by us. The full method →

Frequently asked questions

How many subscribers does EmailOctopus’s free plan hold?
2,500 subscribers and 10,000 emails per month. It is the most generous free plan in the comparison: at MailerLite and Mailchimp the limit is 250 contacts. In return the emails carry EmailOctopus branding, reports are kept for 30 days, and you get one landing page, one form and one user account.
How much does EmailOctopus cost after the free plan?
The Pro plan costs €9 per month at 500 subscribers, €16 at 2,500 and €36 at 10,000. The price list shows the monthly price on annual billing; according to the price list’s own figure, monthly billing costs €12–48 more per year depending on list size. Prices read from the price list on 3 September 2026.
Where is EmailOctopus’s data stored?
The lists are in Amazon Web Services’ Irish data centre inside the EEA. The service is operated by London-based Three Hearts Digital Ltd, so the contracting party is outside the EU even though the data is in the EU. If you record your processors in your own documentation, check the transfer basis currently in force for the United Kingdom separately.
Is EmailOctopus enough for automation?
For simple automation, yes: welcome sequences and scheduled queues work. Conditional branches, lead scoring and paths that react to e-commerce events are missing. If you build a path where the email depends on what the recipient did last week, you need ActiveCampaign or Brevo’s Standard plan.
What surprises people about EmailOctopus?
The 30-day retention of reports on the free plan. If you send once a month and want to compare spring open rates with autumn, the figures have already disappeared. On the paid plan reports are kept indefinitely.
What is EmailOctopus Connect?
A separate product where the emails are sent through your own Amazon SES account and EmailOctopus acts only as the interface. Its pricing differs from the main product compared here; if you already use SES, price it separately.
